Submission FAQs


When can I submit?

Submissions will remain open until May 31st. Final lineup announcements will be made on (or before) June 28th, 2019.


How much does it cost to submit?

Submissions for Big Pine 2019 will range from $27-$57. Big Pine Comedy Festival, Inc., is a nonprofit organization. All fees are non-refundable. Thank you for your donation and support of the Arizona art community. Be sure to watch Big Pine on social media for discounts & promotions.

Who decides who gets into the festival?

The Big Pine submission process is made up of 3 rounds. This year’s judges include but are not limited to; Arizona’s top comedians, national bookers, comedy club owners, promoters, festival producers and industry professionals. Submissions are evaluated based on Material, Originality, Stage Presence and Wow Factor. Cumulative scores from judges determine who moves on and is ultimately accepted into the festival. Additionally, each year the Big Pine Production team reserves several booked spots.


Will Improv teams/sketch groups/podcasts/musical comedy be invited to the festival?

YES! Each year Big Pine accepts between 5-15 groups.


Will industry be invited to the festival?

Yes. Big Pine is dedicated to providing a strong industry presence each year. Accepted performers will each receive a minimum of one set at a Big Pine Industry Showcase. Please check our industry page to view last year’s attendees.


What do I get if I’m accepted?

Big Pine performers will each receive one industry showcase in-front of the 2019 Industry Panel. Performers will also receive an additional 1-3 performance opportunities during the fest, opportunities for free meals each day, discounts on food and alcohol around town, accommodation discounts, festival swag & tee, and a VIP festival pass to all fest events, industry panels, workshops,& nightly after parties.  

*Additional stage time is based on availability, interest and scheduling.

Each year festival performers are eligible to win one of the coveted Best of Fest awards at the Big Pine awards ceremony. Each year Big Pine strives to give away as many paid opportunities as possible. Past opportunities include paid time at Stand Up Live (Phoenix), Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy (AZ), HaHa Comedy Club (CA), Laugh Boston (MA) and The Stand (NY). During the 2019 fest, Big Pine Comedy Festival, Inc., launches the Big Pine Scholarship Program. One hilarious and deserving Big Pine performer will be awarded the Big Pine Scholarship fund of $1,000.


How are the Best of Fest Winners & Scholarship Winners Chosen?

Our production team and industry attendees submit their nominees for Best of Fest at the end of each day. Each event at Big Pine has a minimum of one judge present. This includes Open Mics and Workshops. On the final day of the fest, nominations are tallied and a panel of judges & invited industry determine the winner of each award.


How Much Time will I get?

Set length time may vary.

Stand Up: Sets range from 5-15 minutes.
Improv/Sketch: 20 minutes
Musical Comedy: 15 minutes
Podcast: 1 hour

**Please note: There may be additional opportunities for stage time depending on availability, interest and scheduling.


Will accommodations be provided?

Big Pine Comedy Festival has secured accommodation discounts at multiple Flagstaff venues. Selected performers will have the option to select between discounted accommodations or private accommodations.

Big Pine will have affordable and discounted rooms available for all festival pass holders, and we encourage you to take advantage of these deals.


What type of comedians are you looking for?

We are currently accepting comedians from all stages in the comedy journey. Any comedian, from newbies to headliners,  who are interested in participating in Big Pine are invited to submit.


What types of group acts can submit to the festival?

All group acts will be considered including Sketch, Long Form Improv, Short Form Improv, Musical Comedy, Comedy Ensembles and any other Comedy Act with 2 or more people.


What are you looking for in video submission?

We want to see funny! A stand-up video should be no less than five minutes in length. Improv/Sketch videos should be 2-7 minutes. Videos should be hosted on YouTube and be marked non-private. Judges need to be able to easily hear and see your act.

Please consider the following when submitting a video:

  1. Start with you.
  2. Our judges will watch (5) minutes of your stand up video. Only five. (Seven (7) minutes for improv/sketch)
  3. Don’t save your best material until the end.
  4. Any submission videos with inactive links, expired links, or videos marked to private will be ineligible.
  5. We do not accept “Best of” or “Highlight” reels. We won’t even watch them.
  6. We need to see and hear you. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. High quality videos are hard to come by. As long as we can hear and see you, phone recordings are ok. Please be sure to turn your phone horizontal. Also, be sure whomever is filming you rests the camera on something steady.

  • Do I have to submit clean material?

Absolutely not! We welcome all versions of comedy from clean to down and dirty. However, if you have a clean set of 10 minutes or more please be sure to check the appropriate box on the submission form as this may result in additional opportunities for stage time.

  • Can I submit a "best of reel" for myself or my group?

No. We encourage you to edit your video to start and end at a certain point, but we currently do not accept any highlight reels or “best of” reels. Please try to begin with you or your team, not a host.


I have attended Big Pine in the past. Can I still submit?

Yes. Any video submitted to Big Pine 2019 will be considered. However, if you have been a part of the official lineup for the past 2 consecutive years (or more) we ask that you please consider getting involved in our production team. Our team is currently looking for additional showroom producers, associate producers, volunteers, hosts and more. Please contact us for additional information.


I pre-submitted during another comedy festival submissions, but have a new video. Can I re-submit once Big Pine open submissions?

Yes! You are welcome to re-submit during our regular Big Pine open submissions if you pay a new submission fee. Each submission will be judged separately.


I can’t afford the submission fees but I still want to apply? Is there any way you can help me out?

YES!! Be sure to add us on Facebook and Instagram. Go now! Seriously! We will have plenty of promotional events and promo codes available throughout submissions.


Do I get a refund if I don't get in?

Submission fees are non-refundable. Big Pine Comedy Festival is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization and your submission helps support the Arizona art community through live art and art education. Thank you for your donation and for supporting the Arizona art community.


I didn't get into the festival but I’m still hoping for stage time. Will there be any opportunities for me?

Absolutely! By attending Big Pine you are placing yourselves in the middle of an amazing networking opportunity. During the festival there are MULTIPLE open mic opportunities for ANY comedians in attendance. Additionally, with your submission you receive a FREE festival pass. Your pass will give you access to all festival events including a variety of workshops & seminars, showcases, industry panels, after parties and more! There are even a few opportunities to win spots on a festival showcase later that same night.


Wait a minute! You think I should still come to Big Pine even if I didn't get in? What's in it for me?

Big Pine is a festival for ALL comedians, not just selected performers. Our production team has worked hard to ensure that Big Pine Comedy Festival is a great opportunity for everyone involved. The opportunities for you in Flagstaff are endless. We hope you will join us.


What is Little Pine?

Little Pine is a comedy competition open to any individual who wants to come to Flagstaff and try and win a spot onto a festival showcase. There will be 3 Little Pine competitions during the festival. Sets for Little Pine will be 3 minutes, and if you win Little Pine you will do a festival showcase later the same night. To get booked for Little Pine, sign ups begin on our website in July 2019.
